J.A.M. SERVICE DESIGN

CASE STUDY

DURATION

17 Weeks

PROBLEM

The pandemic made it a very difficult task to organically meet new people, which has a lot of individuals turning to certain match making services and apps. As young students, we have all had at least a few experiences in the world of matchmaking whether that be romantic or platonic. Being young college students, me and my team members identified that often times, people bond most through similar interests and shared experiences, and music is a huge shared interest amongst many people; however, sometimes it’s difficult to put yourself out there, and sometimes it’s hard to meet new people who share your same music tastes. This is where the idea for J.A.M. started.

MY ROLE

Team Members:
Alex Jimenez, Vann Jansen, Yeela Lee, & Zachary Wallace

My two main roles during this project fell in line with being the prioritizer and the facilitator. I often helped keep the team on task as well as ran a lot of the discussions had during the research and development portions of meetings.

Primary Research:
For primary research, I conducted our interviews with two individuals in our target demographic as well as took part in the distribution of the questionnaires.

Secondary Research:
For secondary research, I was in charge of collecting information on the venue of Duffy’s. I also took part in compiling the research articles and data we needed for the development of our project. I was in charge of the layout and designing of our three user personas and I created and designed the service blueprints used in our service, which was later edited as a team with suggestions from instructor. I was also in charge of designing and putting together the two presentations.

SOLUTION

Our final solution was the service of J.A.M., aka Just Awesome Music. Through our research, mapping, and blueprints my team was able to developed this service in the form of an application that can be used by anyone in the Chico, CA area. J.A.M. is a service for those who enjoy live music but might not have anyone else to enjoy it with.

Most people don’t enjoy attending concerts and live music events alone, which is why J.A.M. is there to assure that Chico residents don’t have to miss out on their favorite artists ever again.

The decision to use an app interface for J.A.M. was influenced by our target audience, the ease of access, and overall ease of usability amongst most people.

PROBLEM

In order to better our understand our target audience and our users, we mapped out our findings through territory and stakeholder maps.

The personas gave us insights into what a typical J.A.M. user may look like and what their needs may entail. We used our persona, Eric, to identify certain goals, feelings, frustrations, and pain points throught the use of the service.

The blueprint allowed us to identify certain touch points and pain points in the service. It gave us better insights into the intricacies of J.A.M. and what we needed to focus most on.

Primary: We conducted 2 interviews and sent out a questionnaire to people within our target demographic to get a better understanding of how people truly feel about match making, live music events, and whether or not they could benefit from a service like J.A.M.

Secondary: We looked into the common local venues that host live music events in Chico. To maximize our findings, each person researched a different venue to gather insights on how to make J.A.M. a good experience. We also collected different research and academic articles to deepen our understandings of how people build connections through music and how match making services succeed.

Findings: Through our research, we found that people crave a genuine and authentic experience when going to concerts. It’s also very important to implement proper security measures. A successful service puts user needs and safety first, leading to a better experience overall.

CHALLENGES

Throughout the semester, J.A.M. encountered and successfully navigated several challenges. Initially, we expanded our scope, but we later refocused our efforts specifically on J.A.M.'s offerings in Chico. Despite facing delays due to ambitious research plans, we refined our objectives and successfully gathered essential insights. Our ability to work cohesively.

LEARNINGS

Creating the service of J.A.M. has revealed a lot of things. We realized the importance of companionship through shared experiences and hobbies and the important role that music has in people’s lives. Live music and concerts are something that people want to enjoy together, and meeting people who have a shared interest in something as important as music can build strong bonds and joyous experiences. Chico would benefit tremendously from a service like J.A.M. because of how much people crave that shared experience with people who love music just as much as they do
